Understanding the Essay Topic
Every UPSC essay topic carries a central theme, a philosophical layer and an administrative relevance. First decode what the topic is really asking before collecting examples.
Practice: Choose any one topic and write its core theme in one sentence.
A good theme statement should be precise, balanced and debate-oriented.
Building Dimensions
A strong essay moves across ethical, social, political, economic, historical, technological and international dimensions without becoming mechanical.
Practice: List five dimensions for the topic: Technology is a good servant but a bad master.
Possible dimensions: ethics, economy, governance, mental health, democracy, security and future of work.
Writing Introductions
Introductions can begin with an anecdote, conceptual framing, contrast, data point, quote or contemporary reference. The introduction should create direction, not decoration.
Practice: Write a 70-word introduction for an essay on democracy and disagreement.
A good introduction should frame disagreement as a democratic resource while warning against disorder and polarisation.
